Some students get through the coursework without trouble, but find they have no desire for research. This often happens after a year of trying to do research, making little progress, and finally deciding it just isn’t for them. It is hard for me to imagine that anyone who has not done research in an academic setting can know beforehand if they will like it. My own experience was a love-hate relationship. I enjoyed it, but was often discouraged by the lack of positive feedback. Happily for me I liked it well enough to generate my own internal positive feedback and I had enough determination that I didn’t drop out during the low points. A slight difference in my attitude could have had me leaving the program in year three.
