If you have an outline, use it for your first draft. Then, when you get to the second draft, you don’t need as much structure because you know what you’ve already got to work with. You can revise, edit, and change whatever you want, and you will still have a complete story. Leave this blank until your basic story outline is done. Then when you go back and look it over, you can make notes on any changes, or characters to add. I often add descriptive details about the setting, the characters’ emotional journey, dialogue, romantic moments, or secrets to reveal later. It’s a good idea to add any back story in your notes if you plan on mentioning it in your story later. These notes will be valuable to you as you write your first draft. When you are done with your outline, you should be able to easily write a brief synopsis to describe what is going on in your story. Put it at the beginning of your outline, above Chapter 1, so you will always have it handy. You can print it out, and have backup copies.
